What would happen if a hacker took over your LEA’s domain and pointed it to an offensive site?
It is recommended that the LEA use a generic account with the domain registrar or have two accounts with access in case one of the two persons on the account leaves the LEA the other can still get in.
The account(s) to access the domain registrar should have 2-factor authentication turned on. This would be best practice as it limits the ability of a hacker to take over or transfer the domain.
It is recommended that the LEA keep a current credit card on file with the domain registrar or check the domain registrar regularly to ensure the domain will not expire. It might be helpful to put the expiration date on the calendar of numerous individuals.
ESC Region 12 will host any ESC Region 12 LEA's domain. The only charge is the cost of registration. ESC Region 12 does not charge for any DNS changes or modifications. ESC Region 12 keeps a credit card on file and logs into the domain registrar monthly to verify expiration dates. LEAs that allow ESC Region 12 to host their domain can be assured the domain will not expire as staff come and go from the LEA.
